Dr. Carlena Benjamin is an anatomy and physiology instructor at Northeast MS Community College. She is also active in Delta Kappa Gamma, an honors society for women educators.
Dr. Benjamin has 18 years teaching experience and has taught at Northeast Mississippi Community College for 13 years. During her time there she has served as Co-Director of the Northeast Honors Institute and taught Principles of Biology I, Principles of Biology II, Survey of A & P, A & P I, and A & P II. She currently teaches anatomy and physiology courses. In 2019, Dr. Benjamin had the privilege of being part of the Apple Distinguished Schools process and was featured in Northeast’s story “Moving Forward” available on the Apple Bookstore.
Dr. Benjamin believes her role as an educator is to guide students on their learning journey, creating authentic, active learning situations rather than acting as the primary source of information. Providing students with active learning opportunities creates an environment for individual discovery and the construction of knowledge. It is an opportunity for continued learning and growth for both the student and the teacher. One of Dr. Benjamin’s hopes as an educator is to instill a love of learning in her students as she shares her own passion for learning with them.
